The space between the slats is just over 1.5 inches. The last litter of kittens I brought in were 2 months old but severely malnourished so very tiny and one of them kept slipping through the gate. I just taped cardboard across the bottom half of the gate and was able to keep her in until she was bigger. Now, with the cardboard removed, she likes to play footsy with the animals on the other side.

He isn't able to move it and is unable to squeeze through the bars. The stabilizer on the bottom really help so it won't tip over easily. However, we have two chihuahuas I wanted to keep out of our formal dining room when I bought a new white rug and it is perfect for that. It is light and easy to fold up or move, and the extra long length is great. The opening to our room is 6 1/2 feet and we still have an extra gate panel (that could be removed by unscrewing the hinge) length wise.
Because of the low profile, it isn't an eye sore at all. The wood is raw (no clear coat), so I'm going to stain it to match our floors and it will actually blend right in with the decor!

As the door is in our dining area, I wanted something more attractive to replace the tall wire gate we had been using. I actually bought it thinking that I would stain or paint it. So far I have left it unfinished and it looks so much better than than the old gate that I am finding myself quite unmotivated to change it! Even though it is shorter (18" vs 24"), my dogs have not jumped it yet. Added bonus: because it does not have any horizontal supports, our jailbreaker who managed to scale her way out of the previous wire style gate has been on lock down!
We are still using the older wire style gate to keep the dogs away from our workout equipment out on the patio, and it is perfect for that. This is just so much better looking for those of us who need to balance canine corralling needs with keeping our homes from looking like a dog shelter.
