I had the door open for a bit to let the cats see what it was all about, then closed it and for a day I had a box outside the front as a step so they could get used to going through the entry hole.
Everything is installed with a screwdriver, no hammer or mallet, so it takes a while but will go fast if you have two people.
I have top entry boxes (Iris brand) since one cat likes to spray high. Neither fit so we just cut off about an inch off the rim, using a power tool, and now it fits. I'm pretty sure the height of the bottom cubby was only 14.25" and not the 14.6" that is on the listing. Iris top entry boxes are listed as 14.56" high.
It does help disguise the litter box and it does keep the dogs out for the most part! As I mentioned before the magnet on the door isn't great so they have popped it open.. Easy fix, but for the price you pay the last thing you want to do is spend more money on it.
As for odor this cabinet soaks up the smell of the litter box. I scoop it every night and change out my litter weekly and I can still smell dirty litter inside of it so you definitely have to spray down the entire enclosure with vinegar or bleach, whichever of your choosing.
It does ventilate the odor very well, if you're looking for something that contains the odor this does not do that as it does have a lot of ventilation holes. I recommend putting in an area where you won't smell it.
And there was wine involved?
We have one cat, and two mini golden doodle’s that are puppies . When we brought the puppies home for the first four months we had to chase them out of the litter box and out of the cats food. This is definitely doggy proof we have it located in our laundry room with a small stool the cat can jump up onto, and in the food is placed on top he loves it , he loves the fact that the dogs cannot get to him there or his food
Cons: The entrance is a bit high for my younger cats. All of my cats entered via an adjacent table at first. It took a while for them to be comfortable jumping straight in as the opening is high. Also, it is a bit clunky--check the dimensions before you buy. It is too high for an end table IMO. Although the paw prints are cute. louvers would be better for the air vents. As it is, there is no way anyone is going to mistake this for a random piece of furniture. And the size makes it way to visible to be ignored.
I thought the shelves wouldn’t allow the cat to go to the bathroom properly because there isn’t much room, but 3 out of the 4 cats will go in and use it.
I wish it was a tad bit wider/longer to fit a bigger litter box in.
this cabinet was easy to put together, I managed it by myself in under an hour. instructions were iffy but if you can read diagrams, you'll be fine.
the measurements listed on this listing were a tad misleading. the measurement for the bottom portion is about an inch shorter due to a lip on the shelf (middle). not a big deal unless you're in my position ... I needed to insert a litter box that was high sided all the way around. my box "fit" but couldn't be slid in and out for cleaning. I sanded off about half an inch across an area wide enough for the litter box to easily slide in and out.
the entry poses an issue for one of my cats ... she is a little less graceful and a tad round ... she couldn't comfortably jump in to use the litter box and took to using the floor outside. for now the door has been removed and I will be cutting the top panel out so she can enter easily.
the cabinet looks nice and is sturdy. it contains the litter kicked by the cats and with a couple of special mats, most of the litter stuck to their paws. the docking of a star is due to measurement only because it creates a little modification on my part.
It was pretty easy to put together, I needed a screw driver and that was all. Putting the back piece on was a bit tedious as it was 20 screws without holes. A drill wasn't necessary but would have made it go by in minutes. I also had some issues with the door hinges, I think i put them on wrong the first time but I believe that was more user error than the cabinet. If your door doesn't line up properly you likely messed up the hinges somehow. The cabinet feel a little wobbly but it is sturdy enough to hold my cats, food and water on top. My adult cat is pretty small at under 10 pounds, and my other one is a kitten. Hopefully he'll fit once he's older. So far they're using it, they have a place for their food, I like the look of it, and it's keeping my jerk of a dog out of the litter. A win all around.
Product was pretty easy to assemble. I did it in a matter of 30 minutes while having a drink And watching TV. We put it in the toy room.
The cat did find it fun to kick around all the bags of screws while I was putting it together. He started using the housing as soon as I had two walls and a platform on it. I literally had to build it around the cat.
It’s plenty sturdy for its intended purpose. I gave it 4 stars on sturdiness only because it’s made of particleboard which is substandard to solid wood. I have no doubt this product will last the life of the cat.
