Some of the reviews mention that this is too small and only for kittens and in our case that’s just not true. The 54” one is perfect for our needs. The two kitties that love it the most so far (it’s only been a couple of hours) are an extra chubby 3 year old tabby and our most recent rescue that they estimated to be around 4-5 years old. Neither of these cats are small by any means. I added a photo of one of them on the stairs so you can get a better idea of her size. I’m not sure what she weighs right now.
Even our biggest kitty loves this. She doesn’t fit as well as the others but she doesn’t mind. She’s the tallest cat I’ve ever seen so we knew she wouldn’t fit well. We didn’t want it to take up a ton of space. We do have a wider cat tree and they hardly use any of it. This one has more hiding spots and they already prefer it. It’s very sturdy and we haven’t attached it to the wall yet. It doesn’t wobble or lean even when they get on the very top perch.
I think the size is fine. There are a couple of spots that a bigger cat might really struggle fitting comfortably on (see the circular perches near the top of product) but I think there are other spots that a bigger cat would be fine on—though keep in mind both my cats are medium sized.
I assembled it by myself. The most difficult part is when the screws need to go on the bottom of one of the square or rectangle pieces, but after struggling to align things are started using a pen as a guide and suddenly made the process much easier. But otherwise I was surprised how easily I did the assembly. It’s tedious, so good music or a background movie is my recommendation.
However, my 3 month old 3 pound kittens loved it. They were light enough to easily climb and balance on the tree, and have no problem reaching the topmost platforms. They like and often sleep in the upper house, or on the top three platforms. One of them once vomited/had diarrhea on the platforms, but dried stains like these are easy to remove from the cloth surface with a dampened paper towel.
Also, none of my cats have ever used the attached scratching posts nor were the attracted to do so over the couch. Do not buy solely for those attachments.
Note: If you are putting this together, the 'cat house' boxes that appear in the instructions are actually just the cloth sleeves pulled over the box-shaped frame. There are no boxes that come with the tree itself.
The item came with vague instructions and it took less than an hour for us to put it together (two people). It's not complicated if you can get the hang of building Ikea furniture or such.
I appreciate the materials and it's size and value. It's a great value for what you get.
